The Third Image
Filmmaker Martijn Schinkel
"When two images evoke a third."

Biography
Martijn Schinkel (1971) graduated in 1999 from the Netherlands Film Academy in Amsterdam as a feature film director. After graduating, he founded Het Derde Beeld and specialized in short film. In addition to commissioned films, he also makes free work as a film artist. His work is characterized as visually strong, with the film experience taking center stage.
'The third image' is my starting point. When two images are placed next to each other, they usually evoke a third. As a viewer, we unconsciously try to establish a relationship between those two images. The image that forms in our thoughts is what I call the third image. It is precisely that force that fuels our imagination.

Movies without borders
Appreciated at home and abroad
'I think it is important to approach the grammar of film as a true craftsman. There can only be 'Great storytelling' if a maker understands the grammar of the film language and can apply it correctly. That knowledge and skill results in films that go beyond registration and become an experience in themselves. To visualize an idea is one thing, to film an idea is the true art. An art that can take the viewer with it, can touch them and then release them again in the here and now.'

"Starting from accurate observation, I focus on 'condensing' reality."

"For me it is a challenge to approach filmmaking from many different perspectives. Although my films often have their own recognizable signature, each story requires its own form. This results in very diverse and varied films."
